Propane bird scares are used on tailings ponds to prevent birds from landing on the water. Despite these safeguards, in 2010, Syncrude was found guilty in the deaths of 1600 ducks that had landed on one of their tailings ponds. The indigenous peoples culture relies heavily on native plants and animals and the tar sands development has removed this key aspect of their life.
